That's the problem with a rental. It's up to each landlord whether or not they will allow it. I hope you find what you're looking for and good luck!

What are they not allowing? ANY home based biz, or soaping specifically?

Look for a small landlord, maybe, rather than a corporation. Near a college, for instance. Easier to explain to an individual what you need.

What are you asking exactly? You may want to ask to see a copy of the lease to see how they are worded in whatever area you are looking into. Many leases specify that businesses with a lot of foot traffic are prohibited they do not normally say that ALL home based businesses are not allowed.

I am from ONtario and I don't think there would be a problem with renting and business owning here. I have read a lot of post about it in the US.

I am just starting my business, soy candles right now and adding the soaps and lotions soon and it is indeed a lot of work...but I love that fact that is alllll mine

Thank you everyone for the well wishes in my search!

Now in an update, I am writing a note to self: try to take it one day at a time! I found a U.S. rental search service (free to renters) that works to find you everything you need in a new place. The agent I've been working with has made it quite clear that the woman who told me that the area we were looking at does not allow any apartment renters to operate a biz was completely WRONG. She found a number of places that welcome small biz owners with open arms.

Now, fingers crossed, I found a place in the area we were originally looking at in Utah for a VERY reasonable rate (cheaper rent now than when we originally visited) for a fairly decent size apartment. Here's hoping it works out for us in getting it nailed down.....because OMG, I'm tired of looking!! :lol:

Thanks again, everyone! Unfortunately, it isn't going to work out after all at the Utah place we were interested in.....they were asking for a bit more paperwork than we could provide

HOWEVER, on the bright side, I am looking at a different state....one of my childhood friends moved up to Oregon last year and has been "pressuring" me to go up there so our boys can grow up together like we did. I do have some cousins up there, and checked into renting a couple places there that seemed to be suited to what we're looking for. Crossing fingers that ONE of those works out!

And would it be so bad to admit that one of the additional draws to Portland is that I'd be close enough to BB to get my shipments within a day after being shipped? <Pumping my soap addict fists>
