Teach Soap

Nothing like thinking you'll be able to catch up on your bills this month, and then watching Miss Universe step in and kill your computer, lead you into a pet shop so you come home with new fish and tank, then mail you your car rego renewal so it's waiting for you at home.

Got up yesterday morning and PC wouldn't turn on. Dead. Bummer. Thought to myself "oh well, guess I can just make soap all day". Eeeeeh, wrong! I use the soap making software now... you know, the one that's on my PC

Ended up spending most of yesterday standing around a PC shop, kids going nuts, waiting for mine to be fixed. In the end, most of it needed to be replaced so I basically have a new PC now. There's $600 I really didn't want to be spending yesterday.

I'm glad you got it fixed. $600 is pretty steep. I don't know the prices in your area, but I can get a new laptop for that price here. Get yourself a Maxtor back-up (external drive) and a couple of 16G flash or thumb drives. That way you'll have a back up in case of an emergency.

Just looked at my bill and it's $538 (for some reason I remembered it $583 lol).

Included a new core, motherboard, power supply and case. Then a clean, upgrade and his service fee. LOl and a $10 fee cos I paid by credit card lol.

I would start looking for another repair shop if you ever need one again. I happen to look at my son's shop as he repairs computers and here is his estimate for retail in US funds (not wholesale).

SATA hard drive $129
motherboard (quad core the best!) $84
power supply $99 (can be had for less)
Desktop case (mid range) $60
So the total retail would be $372, which includes updates and clean up. He sells refurbished laptops for $150.

Sounds pretty cheap to me

My BIL just had to replace the same kinda stuff & that was a bit over $900. But laptops here are $1200-2000, so there you go

Everything costs heaps over here!

Some of it is exchange rate but not that much

Its often cheaper to get something directly from the States than from the shops here (if its even here!)
even with horrendous shipping. (sometimes as much as the purchase price)

Yeah, my old laptop cost me $1500 !

Sadly, I was also between a rock and a hard place - I NEEDED my PC fixed asap as I work from home, and my entire business is on the PC. So I wouldn't be surprised if I did get gauged a bit as I had no choice.

Since the electricity current and the plugs are different, a regular laptop from the US wouldn't work for you would it?

Coolah - definitely invest in an external hard drive and back up regularly. It can be a life saver!
Did they say what caused your computer to crash? Was it a virus or something like that?

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Yeah I have back-ups externally as well as on my server I have (online).

Computer just got old. They reckon my case was causing issues, but basically motherboard died, power supply died. It had been playing up for a couple of weeks, crunching like crazy, not picking up what I was typing properly etc. I asked the ex to look at it, but he's so pre-occupied with his 'tactics' and what else he can take me to court for, that he didn't look at it, and thus, I am out $$$
