Teach Soap

We were in petsmart yesterday looking at this little cat that's been there for weeks. We just love her and would have scooped her up ages ago if we had room for another cat. The poor girl had diarrhea all over her box, and her third eyelids were visible behind her swollen eyes... then she started vomiting like mad all over. I alerted the girls in the cat area that the cat was ill and they rushed to clean her up and comfort her.

We were worried she'd not be taken to a vet so I went back and offered to pay for her to be seen. The girls were thrilled and gave me the phone number to their regional person.

I phoned this person and was literally screamed at for at least 5 minutes! She said I was spreading rumors saying they didn't take care of their cats, and that the cat was perfectly fine, and that if I couldn't give her a complete diagnosis over the phone then the cat didn't need medical treatment.

WTF?

I was FLOORED! All I said to her was "My name is Heather Winberg and I'd like to donate a veterinary visit to Rainbow". BAM attacked! I still have no idea what that woman was thinking!

I just finished a nice calm email to the shelters' director explaining what the situation was and offering financial assistance to the cat, and mentioning the treatment I received when I made the same offer to the regional lady. I hope that this person will be rational!!!

All I want is to help that poor sick kitty.

Awww, Heather that is so sweet. I hope Rainbow gets to see a vet and is ok. I love my kitty so much it absolutely breaks my heart to see one without a home or being mistreated. Unfortunately my kitty doesn't feel the same way, so I am not allowed to have another. He was a baby shelter kitty when I get home four years ago.

Wow! Sounds like someone was having a bad day. Why on earth accuse you of spreading rumouse that they weren't taking care of the cats? That just doesn't even make sense. /boggle

Nope, I know! The only people I told were the 2 volunteers who were taking care of the kitties!

oh that's nothing new . Our local animal shelter wont let anyone take an a animal without 4 reference and a vet approval. I so wanted a kitty when mine of 10 years dies of cancer . She was put to sleep becuase I promised her she would never suffer. I apply for a kitty with 5 references and a vet approval... hope you're sitting down for this..... I was turned down.

when they asked about history with caring for my animals (which I go without for them if need be) the vet told them that my last cat was put to sleep becuase she had cancer. humaine right? she was suffering. now I cant get a cat or dog from there. and they wonder why nobody takes the animals...... I did get a new kitty from a friend who was giving them away. her name is angel. just got her spade this last month. She's helped heal my broke heart.

I see the daily paper with these cats and dogs up for adoption from the shelter... breaks my heart.

Heather, thank you for wanting to help that kitty.
I think I would have taken several pictures of Rainbow and sent them to the Petsmart regional office along with a complaint about the person you spoke with on the phone. That was totally uncalled for. I hope there were no other kitties there because they will likely get sick, too. I hope the shelter will step in. It's too bad some people are so stupid.

Melissa, so sorry about your kitty. I had to put my little dog to sleep a few weeks ago because of cancer. Our local shelter is small and doesn't have much funding, but it does everything it can to help people adopt. There are a couple of private rescue groups locally that make it darn near impossible to adopt one of their dogs or cats and that's a shame. I contacted one of them a few years ago and completed all the paperwork, etc. and had the same thing happen - I was turned down because I didn't have a fenced yard. I have 2 big dogs that go out of the house, off leash and are trained to stay in the yard. Why do I need a fence???

Well, unfortunately, the fact is that a lot of rescue shelters are operated by animal hoarders, which is a mental disorder and is tied in to anxiety. So there's probably some pretty unstable people in that "business" in general.
