That is pretty interesting indeed, I can say I've learned something new today. But I'd also have to say I'm so happy for your niece! I don't know her diagnosis of course, but as someone who has first hand parental knowledge as well as being employed in a K-6 special education classroom, I'm sure her parents are over the moon for such an accomplishment. Unfortunately most of our VIP kiddos never will go to college, which is probably why they allow that kind of funding for her. Most regional program centers (social service programs designed for the special needs person) have been going through massive cuts since 2009. In addition to the state cuts, audits were being done, it was being found that most of the moneys for these programs were being misused/misappropriated as well, leaving new families who are finding themselves dealing with the domino effect (employment, social support, medical expenses, etc) that raising a special needs child has out in the cold.
