Rainy falls up the stairs all the time and she is 7 or 8!

Buddy is super cute Coolah! I just want to roll around playing with him and getting puppy kisses! He is a good reason to have been busy! Dogs are so good to have around, cats too of course! But as the saying goes: Dogs have owners and cats have staff. Dogs give you that "I love you" look and it just makes you melt!

Hopefully the cats will soon realize he is just an addition to their staff and will stop having as much issue with him. I have one who hates dogs, she will hiss and swat them if they get close, but they have learned to (for the most part) leave her alone.

Buddy is so cute! I love the look on his face. And yes, I too am one who manages to fall up stairs

As someone who has raised Chows for show, and adopted cats, then a dog, then more cats, they will get used to each other and at least learn to live in the same household. I'm not saying they're gonna be best pals, though one of our cats is completely in love with our big dog (she has issues), but they will find a way to work it out.

When we first got Sushi (our Shih Tzu) 2.5 years ago, she used to chase the cats around, trying to get them to play with her since she was used to living with other animals in a barn (she was a rescue who had been in a puppy mill) and playing with everyone. Eventually, after many MANY whacks on the nose from the cats' paws (claws were usually sheathed), she learned that they didn't like her and so she made do with us :D

We kind of have ownership of our neighbor's cat - long story short, they ignore him so he comes in our house :D - he was absolutely FURIOUS with us for 2 months after we brought Alice (very friendly rescue from a feral spay/neuter program) home. He wouldn't come to us and if we tried to pet him, he'd hiss at us and stare at her. He attacked her a few times until he realized she's just a little softie.

They will work through it :D I suggest sticking with it, unless there are major blood-drawing altercations, then something needs to change. We had a trial period with a young male that didn't work out because he hadn't been neutered long enough for our large male dog to consider him a non-threat to his territory. Then we had a female Yorkie who was just demented and did nothing but growl at anyone. She nipped my husband who was just trying to let her sniff his hand, so back she went.

Vanessa, your house sounds like mine! We have 3 rescue dogs and 4 rescue cats - all different ages & sizes - some of them get along well and others just tolerate each other. In 30 years, we've only had one dog that had to go back to rescue because he tried to dig through a door to get to the cats. We were lucky that my daughter was home that day, because he would have killed them if he got to them.

We also have 2 outdoor cats that we inherited when my neighbor moved and couldn't take them with her.

Rescue cats rock! One of ours is from a shelter, one was taken to the vets where I was working and was super sick, and the other would have been literally tossed to the street. The dogs are from breeders, but if we get another it will be a rescue. My problem is not wanting to rescue ALL of them! My husband too! We see the shelter cats in PetSmart and we just want to help them all. I could see us on one of those animal hoarding shows when we are older LOL.. cept without all the poo everywhere... ICK!

Be ware! DO NOT go to an animal shelter if you do not want to bring home a forever friend! We went to look and drop off some things after our first dog died, sure enough within a few days we have 'Charlie'. Just like my dtr - not planned! :P  :P

Sadly, buddy has returned back to his original owners. It was just the wrong fit for this house and turned everything and everyone upset down. Absolutely gorgeous dog, but he needs someone that can give him their undivided attention and that's just not me unfortunately. Not as a single mum, with two kids, no other dog companion and hoping to make this soaping business thing a success. For his happiness (and safety - the cats were tearing him to shreds, lots of blood!!! ) he has gone to find a more suitable home.

Back to two crazy cats for now.
