Food coloring doesn't work very well in CP, you'd be better off trying some natural colorants that you probably already have in your pantry: paprika, turmeric, cocoa powder.
Your first batches should be small (1 pound or so) and made with no additives (colors, fragrances, milk) so that you can get a true feel for the process, learn to recognice trace, etc.
ALWAYS run your recipe through a lye calculator before using it to be sure it won't be lye heavy.
For safety reasons, I don't use glass at all when making soap, and I also only use silicone, plastic or stainless utensils for mixing. You don't have to wait 24 hours to clean up, but it does make it easier since anything left on your utensils will have saponified and changed into soap.
