Hi, can anyone help.

I'm nearly ready to have a go with lye for my handmade soap, although it is a bit intimidating at the moment. does anyone have any tips that can help me with safety.

No lye, no soap. Even MP starts out with lye, unless it's a synthetic base.

Christian,
Get a really good book and read it before you try to make your first batch and have it handy to look at while making your first batch. Safety first! Have a quiet place and make sure you have Goggles and lots of cool water near by. ( I still have white vinegar on hand too.) NO kids or Pets around and lots of ventilation while the lye is mixed and till the fumes subside. Once you do it a time or two you will wonder what you were so afraid of!

I definitely second you on the suggestion of the book; my favorite book for cold-process soap is called 'The SoapMaker's Companion'
by Susan Miller Cavitch. You can buy it at most any bookstore - or we have it to purchase it from our web site (http://www.brambleberry.com/books.html). We also have a Bramble Berry How-To-Make Cold Process soap DVD that might be helpful for you.

Be respectful of the lye, and follow general safety guidelines (gloves, goggles, long sleeves). Please read up on everything that you can. Preparation is the best thing that you can do

Once you are prepared you will be much more relaxed.

The DVD sounds good, typical me prefer to watch tv than read a book. I will be shopping with you soon. Should buy the book too I think as my 3 year old daughter is starting to copy what i do now. better set a good example.

Her last statement was "lavender is bloody strong daddy"

That was her copying my mess in the kitchen the other night.
