Hi folks, Im wondering if you sell your soap wholesale the person selling it to customers they collect the sales tax and pay that to the state, right? If you sell it on consignment it's the same thing, right? So then if you sell it at craft shows you collect the sales tax yourself and pay in to the state. Have I got it right ? And for that all to take place you've got to register your business and get a tax number? How am I doing so far?
It's just so much easier to make soap and sell it than to learn all this tax information. But I think Im ready to get my feet wet. Can anyone recommend a place to start learning this stuff? In english, meaning not layer talk. thank you so much

When you sell someone product wholesale (like soap to a store for resale), you must have them fill out a 'Resale Tax Certificate' that you keep on file. Then, you don't need to charge them tax. The company filling out the form must be a licensed business in order to not be charged tax:

When you are selling the soap to another person in a craft show type situation, yes, you must collect tax, keep track of it and give it to the State along with whatever forms they want you to have.

what if you do craft shows in a state that your company is not registered to collect tax? im in NYS, and I have an SSID for NYS. if i do a show in PA, would i have to collect tax? if so, who do i send the tax to?
