Hi all. A friend of my husbands bought two of my soaps on my etsy shop - totally cool and unsolicited. I now have 4 sales - woohoo - but I have a long way to go here...As it turns out we are going to this house so I told him I would hand deliver the soap and if he was cool - I would use this opportnity to learn how the 'issue refund' aspect of paypal works. So I do it correctly with future customers I don't know.

Basically - I issued a 3.50 refund which was the shipping cost. Interestingly paypal I guess doesn't care what aspect of a refund you are giving (i.e. the shipping or the product cost portion - seems odd since you are dealing with sales tax too along the way - oh well). Anyway I noticed a net to him was $3.40 with some other .10 fee so he doesn't really get $3.50 back. Ouch. I didn't expect that or clearly I did not understand something about the refunds. I'm confused and asked him what actually does appear in his refund so I'll find out tomorrow when I see him.

My question is how do you handle refunds on paypal when you end up with a customer who has bought enough soap (i.e. 5 bars and they are initially being charged shipping for each bar in some manner which now totals more than $5.00) that you are now going to ship flat rate for $5. If your store policy is setup to issue refunds then you must be refunding them the difference. So how do you go about doing it? I just want to know if I am on the right track in how I did it and that there are still fees for issuing refunds too or I missed a step along the way here
Thanks

Which account do you have with Paypal? If I do a partial refund, the person on the other end gets that amount.

The account type says 'business'. My personal account says 'personal'. Maybe that is an issue in an of itself. From everything I read on the site I can't truly determine the difference in fees except if you really start doing some phenomincal business per month your transaction fee schedule changes for the better. I wrote my friend and am waiting to confirm he received his $3.50 even if it looks different my the paypal account statement.

Any further thoughts?

Thanks

I called Paypal. They assured me that my friend received his $3.50 and that the .10 was a refund back to me (recalculating the transaction fee). I can only tell you all that their User Interface for this paticular page of information is less than ideal (imho) with regards to how they showed the refund. While it is true that the entire transaction it is a net $3.40 when all is said and done but one would believe from the display that my friend only received $3.40.

Thanks all
