It all depends upon your budget and the audience. If you feel that this is a good audience for your products, with the right type of clientele, and you have it in your budget right now to do a trio, then fine, do a trio. But if you do not have that in your budget or if you are unsure about the audience, it is perfectly fine to do one item. If I do more than one item I use small, sample size containers and a guest size soap. Of course you also have to have the soap inventory or the time to cure it if you don't already have it on the shelf. If not, you can always cut some bars in half. If I am just doing one thing, I usually do a medium size, not my normal, but not a true trial size either. You also can mix up what you send so that everyone gets something the same and half or a fourth get something different. For instance, if you are doing 100 bags you send 100 soaps and 100 lip balms, 25 lotions, 25 face masks, 25 bath salts and 25 body butters. You can mix it up any way you want. I personally like this method the best, because it usually creates discussion between the recipients of the bags, which exposes my company and items more.
I have done several of these types of promotions over the years. Don't be afraid to say NO when you need to. Look at the event and the company asking you to work with them. Make sure they are reputable and know how you and your company will (or won't) be recognized. Keep track of new business garnered (or not) from the promotion so that you know if it is worth repeating. Know that once you do one, you are likely to be asked to do more (by many companies). If you are not getting paid for the items, but are doing it as a marketing event, then you need to make sure you look at your budget. Which also means that you need to Plan for gorilla marketing in your business plan and in your annual budget. Make sure to stick to your plans. Look at the event(s) with a critical eye, deciding if it is really best for your company. There are a ton of places and people who could benefit from a gift set of your items, so don't feel like you have just one shot at it! Decide what is best for you and pursue that. If you want to promote your new XYZ item, then find some cute sample size container for that and send those. Packaging is key. Make it cute, noticeable, professional and make sure to include your business info and all the proper/legal labeling. This is the 1st impression of your company they will get and you want them to think you are great and then you want them to find you again.
Enjoy the journey and Lots of luck!
