Well today after still not hearing back from city planner about who I was to get written approval from regarding the usage/storage of lye, I went down to my city hall to see about it in person.

So I found out that I'm not actually residing within the city I call home based on some weird city boundaries that I can't even begin to explain. Now I have to get with the larger incorporated city to get approval for the lye usage/storage. Anyone else have to work something like this out for their soap business? Insights?

thanks in advance.

OK, I see my original post is getting a lot of views, but so far no insights. :(

So not one to give up on trying to find some answers here, let me ask this question. If I just can't get past the regs my city puts forth on keeping a corrosive for a home biz, then I thought about just perhaps doing a private label with a handmade soap manufacturer. Maybe this will get a response....anyone know of a reputable private label manufacturer? Does anyone do that themselves? I am just so beside myself with all of this, because I didn't see this coming in terms of starting my biz up and now I feel like a big disappointment for having talked this up to family & friends when it just may have been a pipedream, thanks to my city.

P.S. I know BB offers soap loaves, and I've been looking at using theirs, but I would like to have more options for an expansive line....

All right, I have taken the hint  Not going to get an answer on my questions above despite the number of views. Sooooooooooo anyway, I have another question - how can I delete this thread before it drives me insane?

Sorry there are no answers for you! I have not heard of anyone not being allowed to store lye in their own homes. It is drain cleaner. How much lye are you storing that they have a problem with it?

Sorry Stacy that you are having trouble finding some answers. I make soap as a hobby, not a business. But if storing lye were an issue than why can I have it in my house without the lye police coming to the door?

You may get around it by having an ounce under the minimum allowed in the home or business. There is usually a cut off that allows storage of lesser quantities that can be up to sometimes 20kg , it depends on the. Ordinance.

If you buy it just before making soap (a couple of days?), then you are not storing it. I buy as many as 20 containers at a time at the local hardware store and nobody cares. The containers are 16 oz. each and I make 33 bars of soap (rough guess) from one container, depending on my recipe. I always use a lye calculator.

Wow. What a pain! How did the city even find out you had the lye? Was it b/c you were applying for some kind of business license?

Here's what I would do:
1) Call the lye company. They deal with regulations applying to lye every day, and they may be able to advise you.
2) Is lye sold locally as a drain cleaner in your area? Red Devil lye no longer seems to be around, but my local hardware store has it in similar containers. Would it be possible for you to store the bulk of your lye someplace else, and only keep the amount that a person can buy as a drain cleaner in your house? For example, I used to buy a box of 6 cans of Red Devil (each container 18 oz), so maybe you could keep 108 ounces of lye at your house.

You may also find that depending on the amount you store, it may have to be stored in a certain manner (i.e. specific type of cabinet etc.).

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice. I have been so busy lately that I haven't had much time to respond that I was able to get it worked out. So all's good on the business front! :)
