The cat thing is actually highly debatable. According to Robert Tisserand and some other rather (world) renown chemists and aromatherapy instructors cats are not only fine with diffused eo's, but also being treated with them. If you go to the Tisserand web site you can find several entries where he addresses this issue.
The BIG problem with a lot of essential oil information is that it is printed in one book somewhere and every book after that just copies the information without verifying it. Sometimes it is a matter of something being said about an herb, often times a herb used internally, and then everyone after that assumes that it is true of the diffused essential oil as well. Often this is not the case. There are many eo's listed in multiple books and web sites as abortificant, when they are not. The herb, when taken internally, in high doses may be (in some cases), but there is a vast difference between the eo diffusing and drinking herbal teas day after day!
I would say that anyone who is not well trained/educated should not take it upon themselves to administer any eo treatment to a cat. But then again, I would say that about a dog or a human as well. Eo's are highly concentrated and command respect.
