Teach Soap

Hiya ladies, this may not be the right place to post, apologies if so.

I've been looking at heat pads, sometimes I really want to gel a batch & the weather here in NZ is just too iffy!!! (4 seasons in 1 day as the song goes!)

The only things I can find are pet/propagation related which all have a maximum heat of 12-15*C (53-59*F).

Is this enough? I thought you would need heat more in the blood temperature range? Any ideas would be so appreciated

Hi Rochy. I use a heating pad I bought in the pharmacy section at Wal-Mart that is sold for things like back pain relief. I paid $11 for mine, but there were bigger ones available for more. Mine has a high, medium, and low heat setting with automatic shut off, and comes with a fabric sort of pouch. I've never had it warp or damage any molds or surfaces so far. Hope that helps!

I use a seedling mat (what you're calling a "propagation mat"?). It works really well for me, is much larger than a heating pad, and is waterproof (and apparently soap batter proof, too, since spills haven't damaged it at all). It raises the temp 10-20F over the ambient temp, which is (for me) plenty. I soap in a cool basement, so it does help when I want to gel.

I have managed to find a seedling mat, the other type starts at $120!!!
Been really busy putting hives into kiwifruit for pollination & desperate to get some soaping done! Hopefully this weekend

Busybee, we live in a mezzanine floor in a shed & my soaproom stays really cold all year. I've tried heaps of towels etc but have alot of trouble gelling in the silicone moulds, so think a heatpad should do the trick!

See if you can find a heating pad in the first aid section of your local store. They are not expensive. I have two of them for my arthritis. I can dig them out and look at the brands if that will help you.
