I have a plastic tray mold (guest size bars) that I've used once for MP, but would like to use for CP.

Will this work? What prep do I need to do so that the soap will (hopefully!) come out of it? I was planning on some sodium lactate to help firm it up.

It should work. Just don't put it in the oven. Adding SL should help release the soap from the mold.

After it sets up for a day, if you can't pop it out, then you could freeze it for a couple of minutes to get it cold and then try popping it out.

Here's my experience, for what it's worth -

After you've poured the soap into the mold, give it a couple of days undisturbed.

Put it in the freezer for a minimum of 24 hours. You want it frozen solid.

It should pop right out of the mold. If it doesn't, run really hot water across the back. If you have to do that, make sure you keep your hand on the top (where the soap is exposed to the air) because the hot water may cause the soap to let go suddenly. Nothing worse than being oh-so-careful to get the stuff out of the mold unscathed and then having it ricochet around the sink, acquiring lovely dents along the way.

Once you have it out of the mold (AND THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT) let it sit for 24 hours to thaw before you attempt to cut it. Cutting frozen soap gives really ugly results. Don't ask me how I know.

I've always had good results using what I described above. I've never used sodium lactate, and I don't grease my plastic molds with anything. And I have an embarassingly large collection. :D

Good luck! Let us know how it goes. (Ie, pictures!)

Thanks, Anita, for the detailed "Plan of Attack" for my soaps! Now that I've gotten some ideas, the hard part probably won't be actually getting the soaps out, but rather WAITING to get the soaps out!
I am really bad with pics, but will try to give it a shot :)

Well, I didn't actually have to worry or try any of the tricks. I made the soap late Saturday night and was just checking it out yesterday (Sunday) evening. I found that I could remove it easily from the tray. Score one for Sodium Lactate!
I made a slight miscalculation when I formulated my recipe. I was pouring into a 2 pound tray mold. So I printed off a 2 pound recipe FORGETTING that the recipe was for 2 pounds of oils, not total soap batter (duh!). So after I poured the tray mold, I had a good bit leftover and was scrambling to find other containers for my soap! I grabbed a few other plastic "cavity" molds, not thinking I would be able to get them out. However, to my surprise, they came out with just a little bit of "urging". Pleasantly pleased & surprised! The only mold I had to leave alone for now was a small silicone ice cube type tray. Some of the soap stuck to the insides of the individual flower cavities. So that one is "resting" for the time being.
I was just shocked at how soon I was able to unmold and how much easier it was than I expected!
