Teach Soap

I'm poor and kind of in between jobs ATM (plus Christmas, oh my!), so soaping has kind of taken a back seat until after Christmas-ish....but....I really want to soap. I have a few FO's and colorants. It's a CRAZY rare Saturday where I have NOTHING to do. So I figured I'd try to soap. I haven't gotten the chance yet to go to Sam's for OO. So, I'm sitting here wondering what are some cheap (not animal) oils I could use....and Crisco comes to mind. Even, if this is a bad idea, I might just try it for the heck of it and to see what it's like for myself. What should I look out for or expect? I don't imagine this would really make a "nice" soap. Just trying to find something to do...and maybe learn a little something while I'm at it....oh, and not spend a crap ton of money.

It will make an ok soap - a little on the soft side and basically no lather, but very conditioning. If you can add some coconut (20% or so) it will harden the bar a bit and also help with the lather.
