Is it necessary to take temperatures when mixing your oils & lye water solution?

Yes. It's a good idea so you can reach a reasonable trace before you hot process it.

I dont worry about temperatures at all with HP - once the oils are melted and the lye is dissolved I add straight away and then mix with the crock pot on low - I have sometimes done it on high and occasionally turned it off but all have reached trace in a short time - even 100% olive oil. Once its reached a reasonable trace I put the lid on - turn it to low and walk away for 10 mins. I do have to set a timer or I can forget about it and it can overflow but I love HP soaping! :D
