Teach Soap

I am new to soaping and in my endless quest for soap porn I keep seeing these soap curls embedded in the tops of soap. Are these melt and pour? Can it be done by shaving still soft CP soaps with a cheese slicer or something? Does anyone have a link for how to make them?

They make the soaps look like the top of a chocolate silk pie. Yummy!

I just make them by using a vegetable peeler on my soap.

Thanks. Gonna have to try it. Should the soap still be pretty soft? Like maybe right after unmolding?

I use a vegetable peeler. I wouldn't try to curl the soap within like the first week after unmolding/slicing it unless you got an intense gel or are working with a hard recipe. It's usually too soft to curl during that period and can gunk up your peeler. At the same time, soap that has been fully cured might shave off brittle or flakey. Find a happy medium and practice to see what works with your soaps and tools to get the shapes you want.

You'll get different shapes and sizes of curls depending on your method. For long swirly curlies I shave quickly down the length of a whole loaf of soap. For short, thicker curls (think more like funnels) I curl down the longer flat end of sliced soap, slowly and with a good bit of pressure. Be careful how you hold the slices, accidents can happen with peelers and fingers! You also might not always get the shape you want for the curl right off the peeler, and you can use a pen or pencil to shape them with. Just wrap the piece around the pen and press lightly with your fingers.

If you aren't going to use the curls right away, store them in a a ziploc bag to keep them from drying out too much.

If you don't want to make a whole batch of soap just to use for curling, LCP (low-sweat) melt and pour blocks work great for curls too. Just watch your CP temp so they don't all melt on you.
