I've made many batches of CP soap and have never experienced zap....until today! WOWZA!!! I am making my first batch of HP soap and wanted to test it. It's been a very long while since I have put my tongue on a 9v battery. Now I remember why!
Waiting for it to cook a bit more. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Good luck with your soap! A good indication that the soap is near the end of cooking is that it turns translucent. If it hasn't hit that stage, it's definitely not ready. Post some pictures of you soap when it's done. Everyone loves soap pics around here. :)

I do not know how much it is superfatted. I just followed a recipe for Kaleb's HP Oat-N-Honey Castile soap because of all the rave reviews it was getting. In the end I added 2 tsp of extra olive oil (per instructions if zaps; 1 tsp at a time) and let it cook. Turned out great...I think.
It finally got to this stage... (sorry pics are not great)

Here is a picture of it in the mold. Sure isn't a pretty soap but it smells really good. They're going to be cut large for my brother and brother-in-law. I am hoping it helps with their eczema.

Will unmold it tomorrow night after work. Then I understand I need to wait another 24 hours before I cut it.

Could you please post the recipe? If not, send me a PM and I will take a look at it privately. You should always run any recipe on the net with a lye calculator. Mistakes online do happen.

Oh sure! Here you go. It actually says on the recipe that it is at 5% superfat. I ran it on MMS Lye Calculator and it seems to be in the good range.

Kaleb's HP Oat-N-Honey Castile
(great for crock pot HP)

32 oz. olive oil (not pomace)
3 oz. castor oil
4.50 oz. lye (about 5% superfatting)
12 oz. water

Add your oils to the preheating crock pot. Go ahead and dissolve your lye in the water. After the lye is fully dissolved, go ahead and add it to the oils. Stick blend to thick trace. Turn the crock up on 'high' and cover with a lid.

Check on the soap about every 10 minutes and stir well. Recover with lid.

After the soap has gone through the separation stage, then has gone through the rising up and turning in on itself stage (and looks like a cross between veseline and mashed taters) go ahead and do the knife test: stick a clean dry butter knife into the soap... if the soap looks waxy, go ahead and do a tongue test... if it still zaps, add an additional 1 teaspoon more of olive oil, stir it well and let it cook for about another two minutes.

Next: add the following:
3 tablespoons honey
Stir the honey into the cooking soap. It should immediately start to change colors, and will ultimately turn dark. It should sizzle a bit. Go ahead and turn off the crock.

Next: add the following:
3 tablespoons oat flour, mixed with about 3 or 4 tablespoons cold water to get all the lumps out (use your fingers to feel-out all the lumps).
Stir-in the oat flour mixture VERY WELL. Now you can go ahead and mold-up the soap. This amount of soap will fill a quart milk carton and a pint (half quart) milk carton.

The recipe looks ok. I would have superfatted more; like 7%. When I make crock pot soap, I normally use the low setting and stir from time to time. I don't use the high setting as the soap can rise past the lid. Properly formulated recipe should not need any more oil during the cook or after.

Okay, good to know! If it turns out good I will make it again and will definitely go with 7%. I looked back at some of my old stuff and it looks like that is what I had used then. I only used the high setting for a short while. I got uncomfortable with it climbing up and was sputtering like crazy. So I went to low and stayed there for the rest of the time I cooked it. Overall I think I enjoyed the HP method and will do it again. I may CP this recipe to see how it turns out too. Gotta wait till payday to get more oils though. Thanks for your help Irena!
