Hello

I am sure I did not search well. But I am thinking of using Coconut oil 76 Degrees, as a Main oil for a soap, as I can get it very cheap. At 19 Cents per pound, I could not go wrong.

I also have Olive Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Sunflower Oil, Lard, Canola, and Castor Oil to use. I would like to use the fewest other oils possible. But have a nice bar. I am just looking for a few ideas. What would work well with The Coconut Oil. This will be one of my Early batches. So far I have only made one. I will be doing one tomorrow. Just have not decided which one yet. :D

Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

I've done 100% coconut oil with a 20% superfat. It's actually a nice bar. The only way to know what you like, is to experiment with different small batches; like 1 lb. (converted into grams). Try one bar at 4 weeks after making, then 6 weeks.

I wish I could get CO that cheap....lol. As state by Soapbuddy.....you can go really high on the CO if you go high on the superfat....I love making soap with a high CO amount but then I really love hard white bars of soap. I usually mix my high content CO with 10 %, PO, 10% PKO and to give it a little TLC...some OO...You can even use 10 or 15 % lard which has a huge conditioning value...be sure to include Castor Oil....at aboiut 5% or a little more...it will give you a nice amout of bubbly and creamyness as well as conditioning value...One other note here....if you really like white bars of soap be careful what FO you use...try to use one without any vanilla in it, otherwise it willl turn your beautiful white bars tan or and ugly brown...but then I just hate brown soap..
good luck with you nice CO soap..

I like salt soaps for the face too. I used 75-80% with the rest as soft oils like Avocado etc. I really like them, don't find them too drying. I have oily skin though, and live in a humid climate.

You've all have really got my curiosity up now about salt soap. I have never tried it, but since I love hard bars of soap I think I'm going to try a batch. I didn't know that you could use that much OO and still make it turn out that hard just by adding salt...gotta try it!! :P

Now wait a minute...be very VERY specific because I myself am learning and taking notes here...

WHAT KIND OF SALT EXACTLY? Special salt you order online or just any salt? When does one add salt during the soap making process exactly?

Thank you in advance for sharing...I'm just taking notes for future experiments at this point...but this is one that has me intrigued....

I use regular non-iodized table salt.

you can apply regular soap as Irena, dead sea salt or other sea salts. You prepare your lye-water with salt. You prepare an almost saturated salt water, (I use 50 gr Salt for 230-250 gr water) then filter it through a coffee or tea filter and then add NaOH to it.
As others mentioned previously, salt hardens the soap so that you can apply more soft oils such as wheat germ oil, Avocado oil etc. The prepared soap is very light colored, almost white to beige , even if you apply dark colored oils and from my point of view, one of the greatest advantages is that you can prepare the soap in small molds without any need to isolate, you can simply apply small silicone molds .

Here a couple of pics from my salt soaps

I don't saturate my water with salt, then add the lye. What I find the easiest is I add 50% (from the total amount of a batch) of regular salt to my soap as soon as the lye water and oils are mixed. It gets hard fast, gels extremely fast and has to be cut while still quite hot, or it will crumble. It makes a nice white soap.

I do pretty much the same as soapbuddy, except I put mine in individual molds so I don't have to worry about them getting too hard to cut.

As for using dead sea salt, I wouldn't. Dead sea salt attracts moisture and weeps like crazy.

When I made salt bars, I used 95% CO, 5% Castor Oil, 50% salt with a 20% SF. I used Coconut Milk for the water (well the difference after dissolving the lye in a 1:1 ratio with water.) The soap sets up VERY quickly, so you actually cut it about 1- 1 1/2 hours after you pour it. It'll probably still be warm, but if you wait any longer than 2 hours to cut it, it'll be so hard it'll crumble. A lot of people use individual molds to combat that issue. The lather is very lotion-like and lovely!
