i use a paint mixer attachment for my drill. you can get a high quality plug in drill for under $50 and the attachment is about $20 for a metal one and cheaper for plastic.
The drill stands up to more abuse then the stick blender and the mixer attachments work very well even after trace. they're made for paint and mixing spackle compounds which is very thick.

I use a Braun to-but was thinking about getting the "squirrel"-nervous that dh will leave me if I confiscate one more of "our" household items to make my goods rofl!!

If you're thinking of using the squirrel or paint mixer, just make sure it's stainless, not base metal and unpainted.

I don't care so much about the brand as getting one that has a stick blender part that comes "off" so that you can fully wash and submerge the mixing part - and not have to worry about the mechanics and electrical part getting totally submerged in water.
