Teach Soap

I did a stupid thing. I'm sure that I read about melting your palm oils, but probably being a newbie and in a hurry to start my soap making journey (and this darn obsession, yeah I'm addicted), it slipped my mind. I have used about 6 lbs out of a 7lb bag of BB palm oil...then it hit me....duh.......you were supposed to melt this stuff before every use.

My question, I just ordered a brand new bag and was wondering if I could mix the oil from the old bag into the new bag to save it, or should I just toss it and rack it up to "newbie stupidity"? I don't want to ruin the new bag either.

So far, I haven't experienced any problems like seizing from the old bag of palm...thank the Soap Gods!

Hi Sheila, welcome to soaping! I never used to melt my palm oil, and only recently started to in order to help get rid of some white spots I was experiencing in my soaps (melting palm oil helps to evenly distribute the stearic acid).

If you haven't noticed any problems using room-temperature palm oil, I wouldn't worry to much about it, it shouldn't affect the quality of your soap. I wouldn't toss what you have left over, I would just gently melt it (if it's in the clear BB bag, you can melt it in short bursts in the microwave) before I used it the next time. Melting should make it easier to measure out of the bag too

If the stearic from the old bag settled to the bottom and you add it to the new bag, there is a possibility that this oil will accelerate trace in your soap batch.

I did melt the older soap, but haven't used it yet. I just made a batch using the new bag. I think I will use the old soap, maybe in smaller batches....just in case.

I did melt the new bag (it was partially melted from the heat anyway) and it seems to be more runny than the old bag even after it has cooled off.
