So, early on I found a recipe for Canolive soap, huge disaster because I got DOS like no tomorrow in the first batch by which point I had made three others using the same recipe. The ratio was 40% olive 40% canola 20% coconut 5% superfat. Lavender Clary Sage got DOS, Calendula Cedar got DOS, Orange Menthol got DOS, and yet, my batch of Peppermint, Thyme, Tea Tree, and Menthol did not. Unlike the others it made a hard white bar with no DOS that was harder in the shower than all the others. I can't figure out what went "right" with that batch while all the others went wrong. I know the canola oil is to blame for the DOS in the others but the only variable is the essential oils I used because my other mentholated bar also got DOS. Anyone know if Peppermint, White Thyme, or Tea Tree somehow prevent oil rancidity? Is DOS a microbial process or is it simply oxidation in the presence of air? The Peppermint, Thyme, Tea Tree was formulated with antiseptic properties in mind, so are microbes to blame for DOS? All were cured on the same shelf in the same conditions and though each was made a week apart the orange menthol was made after the P.T.TT bar. I will keep an eye on it to see if it eventually succumbs to DOS, that is if I don't end up using it all, I love it.

Well, tea tree is an antioxidant. It can prolong the shelf life of oils, but I'm not sure what good it would do in an oil that is already off (hence your DOS). It's my only idea though!

All bars I made with Canola got DOS. I stopped using it. I don't know what other factors can contribute to DOS. Maybe oxidized or old oils?

It was changed to "canola" in North America because "rape" was considered a non-politically correct plant name. It is also related to goldenrod, one of the worst allergens around!
