If I use goats milk powder would it turn my soap brown like the liquid milk does.. I cannot for the life of me get my goats milk to turn out a light color..

The sugars in it can still carmelize to a nice orange but adding once it hits trace, or at least emulsification, I've never had it be worse than light orange. The cooler the soaping temperature the more likely the discoloration will be light. Have you tried freezing the liquid milk before using it as liquid for your lye solution?

Due to the natural sugars, even if you freeze the soap, it will end up a tan color.

Crickey Donna don't get me started on goats milk ha ha. Have had a bit of a traumatic time with. Both that and honey in batches. Mine smell of cookies and are dark in colour. :P

I use frozen goat's milk in all my soaps and don't have a problem with dark soaps. Even my white soaps are goat's milk...

I've not yet tried powder in my soaps.

Even my hot process goat's milk powder soap is only light tan. I must develop the patience to freeze my goat's milk then very slowly add the lye. Patience isn't a virtue I possess in abundance!

I made my first gm soap this past weekend. I used evaporated and stirred 1/2 the measurement of water into the lye, after it had cooled I added in the evaporated gm (the rest of the water measurement in gm) a little at a time. It smelled like really strong dog urine......yuck, but my soap turned out whitish colored.

I've read that if you want to used powdered gm, you can mix it with just enough of your measured water to get a paste and stir it in at trace. I'm sure there are plenty of different ways to do it.

I'm a newbie, so still learning, too....

The nasty smell is normal. Gross isn't it? I found it the worst when I cut the soap 2 days later!

And yes, ALWAYS mix your lye into your water! Water into lye can cause a corrosive volcano!
