I am a bit short olive oil for my last batch of soap that I'm going to make. I usually by my olive oil from BB. It says their olive oil is pure olive oil which is a mix of refined olive oil and extra virgin. So is that what I should get from the store? I have also seen people straight extra virgin. What do you guys suggest? Thanks!

Extra virgin is from my point of view better. You may have a more intensive color and scent with the extra virgin in comparison to the refined oil. However the lye-calc does not change because in refining you'll separate the non saponifiables. The triglyceride is almost the same (regarding the fact that even different harvests from the same plantation would be slightly different)

Several store brands have tested as adulterated. Costco's Kirkland Olive Oil hasn't tested as adulterated so that's what I buy. No problems at all with it. Happy soaping!

I, unfortunately, do not have a Costco near me. I was just going to go to the Walmart in my town. I also just did some research online about adulterated olive oil and the few articles I read said that Walmart's brand was one of those that they found were not adulterated so I figure I can just get the Walmart brand. So if I get extra virgin instead of pure I would just run it through the lye calc as normal and it will still work the same? Is there anything I should keep an eye put for. I am fairly relatively newer to soaping so I just want to be on the safe side

Yup! I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference between refined and extra virgin except perhaps for the color. At least you can have fun experimenting!

One time I wanted to soap, and I had extra virgin, regular olive oil and light olive oil. I didn't have enough of any of them to use just one, so I used all of them. I had no problems with that batch. I'm no expert, but I think whatever you get will probably be just fine.

I buy olive oil from Sam's club. $10.48 + tax for a 3 liter jug. Works just fine. They have extra virgin or lighter version to choose from.

I usually use classic olive oil because it's a lighter-colored oil that doesn't interfere with my colorants. I buy it in jugs at the grocery store and haven't had any problems. Just be careful to check the label and make sure that it is 100% olive oil.

You might want to check out this thread about adulterated olive oil: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7568 (Scroll down to soapbuddy's list of adulterated oils, the fourth post from the top.) :)

Thanks for this thread! I was "researching" and EssentialDepot says to only use Pomace olive oil NOT Virgin/Extra Virgin and yet I was SURE I read that you could. Yeah! Still researching stuff until my order arrives. I don't want to do anything dumb and get hurt.

I've already made my Caution Checklist Sheet for my table in the garage (which is subject to additions):

Is the garage DOOR OPEN and other Beings Away?
Are your GOGGLES ON?
Are your GLOVES ON?
Are you wearing LONG PANTS & LONG SLEEVES?
Are your feet in closed toe SNEAKERS?

ONLY add lye to water . . . NEVER water to lye
Water amount is ALWAYS bigger than lye amount
ALWAYS mix a full 5 minutes to dissolve lye in water completely
NEVER use aluminum or glass
Lye water ALWAYS gets added to oil . . . NEVER oil to lye.

Anyway, anyone who wants to print this out, please feel free!

I have never used pomace olive oil. I know there are a lot of people that do but I have also read that some have problems with it. It is fine to use regular oo, light oo, or evoo. I tend to use the regular because it is lighter in color. I have never had a problem with it. Now if I could just find some information about Kroger brand OO if it's adulterated or not....

Love your list! 8)

I use whatever olive oil is cheapest. Right now that is pomace. I honestly can't tell the difference in soaps made with pomace or those made EVOO.
