Teach Soap

Can you all see any problem with parcelling out the butter/oils into pre-made containers, so that they I just need to grab said container and lye and water? I buy oils and butter in bulk and it is a huge pain in the rear to drag everything to the kitchen. I would love to just have a day where I get out like 10 individual containers and measure out all oils and butter, and then I could just grab a container or two on soaping day.

Any foreseeable problems with this setup?

A lot of people do it that way. But if you use different recipes, make sure you write on the container what recipe it is (including lye & water needed for that batch).

The master batching sounds like what I want to do; I just want to stop lugging those huge pails of oils around the house, so if everything is all together in one smaller tote, that would be awesome! Granted, my storage room and the kitchen is all on the same floor, but when you have a baby gate, and a baby, trying to wrangle all that stuff through multiple rooms is a headache.

I do that. I have plastic food storage containers (like our chinese comes in over here) and I pre-measure everything out for a month in advance. Then I just grab one, melt it down and add my lye.

Coolah, I was reading some back entries on your blog and that's what got me to thinking about it. I was like, "That is GENIUS!" but wanted to get others' thoughts as well:) I will have to figure out a storage system and then make sure I label it, but it will be a relief to just pull the butter/oil mix, scent, lye, water, and mold. I can carry that in one go!

I use the bottom shelves of my curing rack to store them. Which is in my laundry. That was when I was making just 2lb batches and all my solid ingredients fit into the chinese containers easily enough.

I tape a copy of the recipe on the top of the bucket lid. It's alot easier than pulling out and weighing as you go.

My husband seems leery of this setup because he says we don't have the storage space, but really, I converted our 4th bedroom into a soaping room for materials, so I just need to reorganize and it'll be great!
