Is Canola the cheapest soapmaking oil? Is it considered in any way to be an inferior soapmaking oil?

It's a pretty soft oil, and not cleansing. I wouldn't use it as a "main" oil. It is conditioning though. If you go to www.soapcalc.net and use their lye calculator, you will see all the properties of the oils you're using. You can create recipes, even if you don't use them, just to see what kind of soap you'll end up with. It's actually a lot of fun to play with :P

Best of luck,
Brandy

I got DOS with canola, so I don't use it.

I made one batch of soap using canola oil at 15%, along with Coconut Oil 35%, Olive Oil 15% and Lard 35%, and superfatted with castor oil that turned out beautifully! I'm hoping with it only being 15% I won't get DOS. I'll have to keep a close watch on it.

Well, that IS kind of scary. Not very appealing is it? How long does it take for those spots to happen (if they are going to)?

I made a batch after Christmas using canola at 15% and so far so good. Will keep watching it to see if DOS develops. I hope not because I really like the recipe!

I love this place. I keep learning and learning like the energizer bunny.
thanks soapbuddy for your reply.
@ljm1180 please keep us posted on how the soap turns out. I'll keep my fingers crossed so you don't get the DOS!

I use 9% canola in every batch, it really bumps the conditioning number up. I have not had DOS yet in over 2 years of using this recipe. I live in cold dry Canada tho.

My standard recipe uses 10.97% canola. I see DOS very infrequently and it seems to manifest when I use floral notes but no hard evidence to support. When I see DOS it's usually when the soap is > 6 months old.
