Made the huge mistake last night of using a small bathroom-sized cup for my FO last night. Good thing it was one I liked, as the cup basically dissolved on my countertop and my entire kitchen smells like a big, fat, juicy ORANGE! I have read again and again on here about NOT using plastic cups with FO and unfortunately did not heed your wise warnings/advice.
So.....am needing to find new containers for FO/EO (I know shotglasses were mentioned). And while I'm at it.....I need to get a good container for my lye water, too. Where do I look for an appropriate container to combine the water and lye in? Also, what do you pour you lye into before mixing it into the water? The FO disaster was minor, but it has motivated me in a BIG way to make sure I don't take chances with the lye.

On the hunt now for containers for FO/EO, lye water, and lye itself. Throw me your suggestions....please!

For my fo's & eo's when measuring, I use glass shot glasses that I got at the dollar store. They were 2 for a $1.

For my lye water I use a juice pitcher that I also got at the dollar store.

To measure my lye I use a stainless steel measuring cup that I bought at a local restaurant supply store. But, if you go with metal, make sure it's stainless steel. Sometimes they have aluminum ones that look just like the stainless steel ones.

Hmmm....hadn't considered a juice pitcher! That would be easy to pour, obviously :) I'm assuming the plastic is strong enough to hold up to the heat of the lye water? Is there a certain type of plastic that I should stay away from?

Not sure where you're located, but I found some awesome stainless steel cups (think like a coffee cup) in the camping section of my local department store (Kmart if you're in Oz). I've never been camping, but they are light weight, stainless steel and perfect for FO/EO.

I mix my Lye in a stainless steel bowl too - and have one of the above cups dedicated to measuring my lye.

I *might* venture into the camping section to check for some stainless steel items, IF hubby and sons are not with me. If they are there, I might as well call it a day and throw in the towel....it's right next to the fishing section.....they'll be lost there for hours.
Good idea to check there for stainless steel, though!

Although just had a question....do the EO/FOs do okay in metal? It doesn't react with them in some way?

I went to St Vincent DePaul thrift store... found an 'antique' pitcher... no recycle number on the bottom... very hard, very tall and use this for the lye water. For measuring the lye crystals, I have plastic cups that I can throw away, the lye is dry and in the cup for less than 1 minute as I have everything set up to go at that point. Just be sure to wipe down the cup with a dryer sheet.
FO\EO = shot glasses all the way. Hope your counter top is ok. I am looking to get a vinyl table cloth for mine... next Monday is half-price day at the thrift store :D  :D

I have the stainless steel pitcher from BB, has a nice splash guard too. Really like it!

Over my counters I just use a shower curtain I got at the dollar tree. So far it's protected against spills and if it gets ruined, it was only $1 :)

I cover my table with a piece of freezer paper. All the trash goes in the middle, it gets rolled up and tossed out. Though most of my "trash" goes to the recycling can.

If you know anyone who runs a route for The Peddler (you know, the free selling stuff newspaper) or something like that, you can ask if you can have their old issues. I work at a motel, and I just happen to work the night the new issues are put out, so she just asks me if I need more newspaper to line my counter with, since all she does is recycle them - she doesn't have to report back how many were leftover. Plus we get our local newspaper 3x a week and the nearest big city newspaper daily. So I have plenty of newspaper to line my table and counters with.
