I tried to do a forum search but said too many hits. Anyone ever try making soap with ocean water? I read you have to superfat at 15%? Anyone know anything about making soap this way?

I'm sure I read somewhere here about someone doing it... hopefully they see your thread.

You can sub all of ocean or salt water for the liquid portion in your recipe. There is no need to superfat at 15% unless you want to. Superfatting at 7-8% should be fine.

I love this idea...but guessing there are lots of tiny living things in ocean water...which would all die in the process but would vegan soap still be vegan if made with ocean water? or rain water for that matter? hmm something to ponder...

I'm thinking there's nothing living in rain water that isn't in well water, as long as it's not stagnant rain water. *"Mosquito Larvae Soap", great for exfoliation and The West Nile Virus ;)

I've made soap with ocean water and love it. I just made a normal recipe with 7% SF. Used anise oil and call it seafoam fishermans soap. I just finished wrapping up a bunch.

The vegan question is interesting... and bringing in the well water/vegan comment, hhhmmmmm. Even city water has the carcases of dead creatures in it. I guess the only source would be bottled or really filtered water.

I have used rain water. Use it right after it rains, not allowed to sit around for more than a day - same with snow. And I usually run it thru a coffee filter just to be sure.

Now I wish I had some ocean water I could use.

Susie, check your local seafood department, some of them have bottled sea water for sale.

I've been thinking about this. I wonder if people that have seafood allergies would react to soap that has sea water in it?

Not 100% sure on that one, but I do know MANY folks who are allergic to shellfish who regularly swim in the ocean. Let me text my dad and ask him, he is a doctor! Get back to you as soon as he replies!

Maybe some of you have seen this site already, but this gal uses a lot of sea water in her soaps. She comes across as friendly on her blog, so maybe she'd know about the sea water/vegan issue?

Dad was also vegan for around 15 years! He wasn't one of the ones that is VERY tight mind you, but he never had an issue with sea water. I'm sure he consumed a lot while sinking to the bottom when trying to swim LOL

Alright, he says that people with seafood allergies are fine with sea water.
