Hi my name is Dana and I am a very much newbie. I have alot of questions but for now I will just ask one. Can you use cp soap for newborn babies...hearing about lye and how many things can go wrong or it is so dangerous it makes me Leary of using it. My friend is having a baby and I wanted to make her a soap like flower pot filled with baby soaps on a stick, like onsies, bottles etc...Or should I stick with m&p soap?

There was a baby bastille soap made with buttermilk posted on the Soap Queen blog last fall.

I haven't tried it yet, but it's on my list of recipes to try.

You can do the shaped soaps with CP, but they need to stay in the mold a bit longer. And CP also needs to age ~6 weeks (6 months for castille!).

I would actually talk to mom first. If she doesnt know, she should ask her doctor when it is actually safe to use ANY kind of soap on newborns. Then, you can do a 100% olive oil soap for her to use when the doctor says its OK to use soap. I made 100% olive oil soap infused with chamomile, but no other additives - no FO, no EO's and no herbs - for my friends baby, but she didnt use it on him until he was 6 months old.

My sister was told to wash the kids with soap every couple days from the day they were born. Surprised my mom! They even washed them with soap in the hospital before she left, showed her how to do it properly. May be different in the US though.

Castile aka 100% olive CP soap is best for babies, but it requires a long cure time. I would start with MP base for now, til you get the hang of CP (cold process). Go to BrambleBerry http://www.brambleberry.com and try their MP sample pack.

They seem to change their minds about child care on a very regular basis. The only one I think is a bunch of hooey is the whole don't give them a pacifier, they'll develop nipple confusion! *facepalm* None of mom's kids were ever confused where dinner came from! LOL

I'm with a few previous posters, we didn't bath my girls with soap until they were about 6 months old. And we just recently introduced using bar soap, but on a pretty irregular basis. They'll be 5 in June. We do use shampoo on their hair about once a week.

If the new mom uses bubble bath in baby's tub there's even less reason to use soap. We started that about 6 months old, they think the bubbles are amazingly fun! But once you put bubbles in there's really no point of using more soap on top of that.
