I was just invited to do every other Sunday at the local Farmer's Market for the upcoming season!! I am so excited but nervous. I have never done a show of any kind and I only just started selling my soaps. Any and all advice is much appreciated!! Do most of you accept credit cards? What do you do about keeping product from melting at summer markets? aahhh so many questions!!

That's great!

I've only done fairs, but it really seemed to help that I knew my product. I could rattle off the ingredients, talk about the qualities of particular oils--and of course honey and beeswax, since I'm a beekeeper. I kept the display in line with my product style: natural wood and the like, no plastic. If you're naturally friendly, it really helps to chat with people.

Good luck, and post pics of your table for us!

Thanks ladies.
good tip on making sure I know my products...I feel like I have a good base of knowledge but it would not hurt to brush up before the market starts!
I will also be using a lot of wood and natural materials in my display - the name of my little business is "Treefort Naturals" and my focus will be on as natural products as possible.

I only do CP too but I will have some balms, body butters, etc....those are what i worry about melting...

ooh credit card app for a smart phone might be a good excuse to get an iPhone??

Here is my brand new etsy shop! www.treefortnaturals.com

Thanks!!

Good luck on the market. After you do a few, you won't be nervous.
I checked out your etsy site and I love your labels. They're very clean (no pun intended).

I have to warn you about calling your one balm "Bug Balm" or even hinting that it gets rid of bugs. Insecticides are regulated by the EPA and if someone at your market decides to make a call, you could get in some serious trouble.

really? Just b/c I call it bug balm? I have seen similar things all over etsy and have purchased something similar at a local store...Is it the words bug balm that are the problem or do problems arise if you advertise it as an "insecticide"...(which I clearly don't). I simple state that the essential oils i use are known bug deterents.
can anyone else weigh in?

If you refer to it as an insect repellent, that's an insecticide. Since you're using essential oils, and that's what's helping keep the mosquitos at bay, then it's considered a biopesticide.
Biopesticides are still regulated by the EPA.

Now, if you were to change the name and only list the ingredients and say nothing about pests, insects or bugs, then it would be fine.
And remember, just because someone else is selling things that way, doesn't make it legal. There are 1,000's of Eczema creams, lotions, soaps etc. on Etsy claiming to help with Eczema, which isn't legal to say unless you've had it tested and approved by the FDA.

Also, I in no way said anything to upset you or anything, I just wasn't sure if you were aware of the regulations.

JGL - you did a good job on converting that one! I like the look of the burlap... you could continue that theme at the market for your table top. You could do a search on this site for other threads on flee\farmers markets. There have been alots of advice in the past.
I would try to help but right now I am packing my DH for a trip to Florida and its crunch time.
