Teach Soap

Hi All,
Trying a liquid soap for the first time today. It's 90% olive, 10% castor; I'm going for a moisturizing shampoo. I'll let you all know how it goes!

Hope the liquid soap turns out well.

So... not sure. It got very gloppy after about 45 minutes of stick blending on and off (more on than off), like a beige pudding.

Then it thickened up more, and got darker, and clearer. But it never got "like taffy," that super sticky stage I've seen on some You Tube videos and talked about in my book. Of course, there's no coconut oil, which apparently makes it stickier. Now I'm stirring every half hour. It's dark, clearer, and stickier.

Shrug. We'll see!

Mine never got taffy like either and I do use coconut oil in mine. I wouldn't worry about it. Do you have phenophthalein to test the pH with?

I don't, actually. BB doesn't include it in their kit, so I figured my impulse to try liquid soap tonight would work out. From what I've read, I can do a zap test or just dissolve one ounce of paste in two ounces of water. Clear=ok.

I did a zap test on mine after it cooked for about 3 hours. Mine never got like taffy either - it felt more like hot process. When I diluted it, it was cloudy at first and I thought something went wrong, but it cleared up in about 24 hours. Works really well, too!

It's been about 3 hours now. I did a 3% superfat, because I'm less worried about cloudy than I was about drying and alkaline, especially in a first batch. I'll let it cool, and dilute the paste later. Or maybe just dilute a smidgeon to try tonight. Oh, and I've been stirring every half hour over the 3 hours. Some people don't stir at all, I gather, and some periodically. Since I'm doing a double boiler rather than a crock, I figured I'd stir.

Sometimes A Mistake is so much fun, You just have to do it again!

I diluted and tried some, and it seems to work. I put the rest of the paste in a bucket in the fridge. I'll dilute more on Monday (probably). So many people ask for liquid soap, I feel like I have to give it a try. And my little girl's curly hair needs a good olive oil shampoo!

I used the soap in the shower as a soap and shampoo, and I have to say, "Wow!" My hair is fluffy, soft, curly, not dry at all. I'm liking this! Can't wait to give some to my favorite testers!
