Hi everyone

I just used a soap I made about 8 weeks ago, & it was a little tingly, tested it for zap (I know it's way too late!)
& POW!!! :o

I didn't bother zap testing when I should have because of the massive superfat. Lesson learnt.

This was an attempt to use up some old Virgin Coconut Oil I had sitting around from pre-soaping days.
I used Soapcalc & have re-checked to see where I went wrong but cant figure it out.
Maybe I'm using soapcalc wrong but I thought it was pretty easy to use? :?

Its a very small recipe but I weighed it out in grams.

I had 424g coconut oil left
140g water
62g lye

Any ideas? I'm really puzzled.

I'm assuming the oil doesn't change over time? It still smelt ok

Thanks so much for any suggestions :D

For a 10% superfat, you would have needed 70 grams of lye. I don't have my lye calc here right now, but 62 grams of lye should have worked ok. Is it possible that you didn't reach true trace? Is it possible that what you are tasting is salt instead? Coconut has a pretty stable shelf life.

Thanks so much for your reply soapbuddy :)

I've been away for several days harvesting honey, phew, big job nearly done! :D

This was my 1st single oil soap (previous batches all had palm oil with a quick trace) & thinking back I do
remember thinking it was taking ages & pouring it fairly thin. Does coconut oil go to heavy trace? (stupid question? )

It was really hard the next day & nice & uniform in colour. If it had been false trace would the soap have 'set up'? :?

Thanks
Rochy

Yes, it is possible to reach false trace, have the soap set up and still be zappy.

Thanks so much!

I'll bin it & try again. I've learnt heaps about soaping since then & that is now my 1st failed batch. :(

Try again time :D

Just a quick thank-you to everyone on this forum, you are all so great, & it's amazing to have you all
share your knowledge to help people like me out.
