I have a recipe that will 'rice' on me if I make it. So I put it out of my mind with the purpose of never using that one again. Then I go to use up the left over of this soap and again I fall in love with it! I have read that the fragrance can cause ricing but can a combination of certain oils do this as well? I have used the FO\EO from these batches in other soaps without a bit of problem.
Here is the recipe: canola oil 6%
castor oil 7%
coconut oil 20%
babassu oil 24%
palm oil 43%
water 11.5 oz
NaOH 4.7oz
superfatted to 5% with a water discount of 36%

If there is something I can do to modify this recipe a little, I would try it. If not I will just have to live with the fact it is too difficult for me to use.

Are you saying that this recipe will rice even without adding any FO or EO? At what temp are you combining your oils and lye water?

I never tried it without fragrance, but no matter what fragrance I use it riced. I soaped at 110 to 112. The first time it went into gel stage and I was able to blend it smooth. The second time it started to rice and I got the blender to it and blended some more and then poured. The first time I ended up glopping it into the mold.... placed in oven and the gel phase continued. Both were great soaps! I have one little circle of the second batch left... did not want to give this soap away.... since it riced. This soap is now 10 months old. Since it riced with two different fragrances (one FO, one EO) I presumed it was the recipe. I could next week make a batch without any fragrance.

Which FO and EO did you use? Some do accelerate trace, seize or rice.

#1 was peppermint EO 1st distillation from BB
#2 was niagra falls from southern soapers

Since then I have used both in other recipes and never a hint of excelleration, ricing or seizing.
