i just zap tested a batch of soap i made about a week ago and it still has a pretty strong zap, but i know i didn't put too much lye in it. is it normal for it to zap for this long, or am i just being impatient?
also, it didn't gel, and i only used 25% lye concentration.

Did you gel it or put it in the refrigerator? I've read that if you put it in the fridge to set up, it can zap for several days afterwards. I insulate my soaps, so I've never been zapped yet (only 6 batches in though.)

i pop it in the freezer shortly after pouring, and take it out later the next day.

Even ungelled soap should not zap a week later. I believe the maximum for ungelled soap is 3 days. If you post your recipe here, someone can check it for you. But it sounds like a lye heavy batch and you should probably dispose of it.

this is a picture of the soap in question.. actually the whole batch looks like this..
the undersides of the bars don't have these white patches (which i had assumed were soda ash), and they don't zap at all, so i'm guessing it's lye water that rose to the surface of the soap.

That looks like soda ash to me since your soap doesn't zap. Ash doesn't always show on all sides.

the only zapping part of the soap is the white stuff. the areas that don't have it don't zap at all, which is why i'm thinking it isn't just soda ash. after washing the stuff off on a smaller piece and washing my hands with it, it doesn't burn or tingle or anything. ugh :( i hope it can be saved.

So, once you have washed it off does the soap still zap?
