When you make your soap, do you just name it the name of the fragrance or do you create a unique name for it, maybe pertaining to the way you decorated it? I was wondering what the majority of soap makers here do.

I haven't started making mine, but have all my 'marketing' I.e. logo, soap names, product offerings etc mostly named and figured out.
I think its totally up to you what you call your soap. You could call them Diana's Soap and then simply pick a key ingredient and call its name or fragrance out. For instance, Diana's Soap - Rooibos Tea Bar or Diana'Soap - Vanilla/ Lavender/Patchouli or it could be a specialty bar superfatted with Shea and you could call it Diana's Soap - Shea Away (Shea for the Shea Butter and Away as in a scent that will carry you away) and then as a small subhead call out fragrance notes of Vanilla, Lavender and Patchouli.
I think its totally up to you and how you want to present your creation.

I try to keep it simple and name the soap after the highlighted ingredient: "Hemp Lemongrass", "Black Tea & Cocoa", "Honey", "Coconut Sea Salt", etc.
The only one i have kind of given a "name" to is my gardener's soap whicn i call "Herb Garden"...b/c it combines a lot of different herbs and essential oils.

Most of mine are in response to inspiration--a friend runs marathons, and asks for a tea tree oil soap--Marathoner's Relief is the result. A friend of mine is interested in Middle East peace issues--voila! Walid's Peace--goat milk and honey with ground olive leaves. Friends buy a lavender farm and I get some of their essential oils: True Lavender. We attended a cousin's bat mitzvah, and part of the festivities was a havdalah ceremony to mark the end of shabbat: pour a glass of wine, light a multi-wicked candle, and pass around "besamim," fragrant spices, like cinnamon and clove to inhale, as a way of taking the sweetness of Shabbat through the week. And "Havdalah" was born, a cinnamon/clove/orange goat milk soap. Another friend talks about her hippie days, so a ylang/patchouli/clove/lavender soap is the result, called "Summer of Love."

And so on...

Those are all great ideas. Thanks for the input. I think we can get as creative with the names as we are with the soaps that we make. :D

Great topic!
I struggle with trying to come up with catchy names for my soaps since catchy seems to stir up more interest.

I think it depends on the soap too. Some names come very easily and some don't, so I think the ones that I have trouble with will be named after the key ingredient or the fragrance name. I think the "cute and catchy" names make them unique though. But, if you have a customer that is familiar with a certain fragrance, naming it by that might help with the sale.

With St. Paddy's day coming up, I'm trying to decide if I want to name my stout-and-oatmeal soap "Pogue Mahone." Love The Pogues!

I think it also depends on the big picture of your business plan and product line. I think consistency in branding is important. So for me, simple is the way to go. My logo, packaging, ingredients, etc. are very simple, clean, natural and therefore I want to keep the names of the soaps in line with that. On the other hand, if your soaps/products are colorful and fragrant and your overall look is fun/fancy/luxury...you would probably want to go with names that fit with that look.

I agree with JGLMom. If your business name is something like "Sweety's Cupcake Soaps", then I wouldn't be expecting your soap to be plain rectangles with names like "Lavender" or "Patchouli".
My business name is The Naughty Soaper, so I have names like "Bad Betty", "Southern Harlot" and "Wicked". Picking names for my soap is one of my favorite things of soap making :)

So far I just name them by either the FO or something that makes me think of them, something they inspired. For instance Spots! actually has spots, it taught me that TD can precipitate as small white balls. And Mad Scientist is what Dad called me when he walked into the kitchen and saw me soaping that batch!

I one time ran a contest at work when I could not come up with a name.... they did great, although I did end up combining two of the names. Each person got a bar of the soap.

Since I make goat milk soap I name my soaps after my goats. Example is Polly's Sweet Pea or Trista's tried and true. Makes the soap more personal. :P

I have a few soaps I am hoping to come up with new names for bcse though I believe they are fantastic scents they are not catching enough attention for people to pick them up and actually sniff them so that they might buy them.
Others i am just not sure why they aren't selling. Who would imagine that a soap with notes of vanilla, coffee and cinnamon would just sit there and not move a single bar?
