Teach Soap

does anyone know if the water mixed with sodium hydroxide can be replaced with ie. carrot juice, pumpkin juice and still retain its colour. I've tried pommegranate that went a brick brown and red cabbage that went yellow. Just could save me some time if anyone has tried fruits, veg or berry juices instead of me experimenting with all my vegetables in the garden. Thanks. P.S so enjoying looking at everyones creations on here.

In my experience (which isn't extensive, I admit, but...) most reds don't stick. I tried wine to make a Valentine's Day soap (which others seem to have done successfully). Other than being ashy, the soap is fine, but it's beige. The red did not survive. From what I've read, most red things (beets, for instance) don't stick. I think if you want red, you have to go for either a red clay (brick red, depending on how much you use), rose clay (pinkish), or try paprika, which is red if used whole or orange-red if you infuse it in oil.

And that's the extent of my experiments!

Brambleberry has an e-book for sale that you can download and it lists lots of natural colorants (fruits, veggies, herbs) and what color they are, how well they work, etc. The only vegetable colorant that I've used that sticks is carrot puree (I use 2 oz. jars of baby food) It leaves a pretty peachy color unless you use milk - then it turns bownish. Paprika and turmeric work well, too.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Pparika works for a peach color, just make sure you strain it out before use, otherwise it will be scratchy.

I found out this morning that if you want orange - let your GM soap gel! The batch that looked like road kill I made last night was left on the bench as I wasn't going to bother trying to save it. When I tipped it into the bin this morning, the bottom was bright orange!
