I would feel a lot happier if I knew the actual values of the oils and fats I have.
Burettes are really expensive, but I was thinking of another way to do it:
My smallest scale measures to 0.1g, which is the same accuracy as a burette can manage (0.1mL).
I already happen to have some 99% methyl alcohol in the lab. So, I thought, if I make "soap" (but with sodium methoxide, so that soap actually won't form), and accurately weigh the fat and the NaOH, then I could use a 1N solution of hydrochloric acid to neutralize, then weigh how much I have left, and do the calculation. I think this will work and not need any more equipment than I have already.

Sounds interesting. You would need to do this each and every time you buy the oil new, since the plants are grown in different regions under different growing conditions. Each oil has a SAP range because not every same oil will have the exactly same SAP value.

Yes, I see. I will have to buy larger amounts so as not to have to test too often. My problem is that I tend to be a perfectionist.
