I would feel a lot happier if I knew the actual values of the oils and fats I have. Burettes are really expensive, but I was thinking of another way to do it: My smallest scale measures to 0.1g, which is the same accuracy as a burette can manage (0.1mL). I already happen to have some 99% methyl alcohol in the lab. So, I thought, if I make "soap" (but with sodium methoxide, so that soap actually won't form), and accurately weigh the fat and the NaOH, then I could use a 1N solution of hydrochloric acid to neutralize, then weigh how much I have left, and do the calculation. I think this will work and not need any more equipment than I have already.
