I have been making my own laundry soap for some time now and I will never go back to commercial detergents. I use borax, washing soda and my own soap. When I do my whites (I'm a nurse) I add a little biz whitener and I'm good to go! I have a well with heavy iron content so bleach is out of the question. With my stuff I have no residual yellow or stains! Once you try it you will never go back.
Here is my recipe:
12 oz shredded soap
3 C borax
3 C washing soda
4 qt. water.
cover the soap with water and slowly melt on stove
in another pot boil borax until dissolved and add washing soda
mix the two pots together in large covered container (or small covered pail)
let mixture set overnight and mix with stick blender to emulsigy the next morning. Mixture will separate overnight with a layer of putty on top and water on the bottom stick blending for a couple of minutes will change it to a pudding/custard consistency. I use about 1/2 to 3/4 C per load but it depends on load size and soil. BTW it is about 1/10 the cost of detergents! Hope that helps,
Marj

When i was in Culinary school we'd have uniform inspections and get marks taken off if our uniforms were stained beyond reason and we only got 3 uniforms. So here's a little trick I learned then, for whites only.

Use a cup of automatic dishwashing detergent, and your regular laundry detergent and the hottest water you can make your washer wash in. (Automatic dishwashing detergent is basically powdered peroxide like oxiclean) it'll take any color out of the clothes so make sure it's just whites. worked like a charm for my uniforms.

I recently tried this myself & will NEVER go back! I did a different recipe than what's been posted after doing a lot of reading as well. I read over and over that lard is wonderful for washing clothes so that's what I did. I used a 1lb. block of lard, melted it and combined it with hot water, borax, washing soda and some lavendar & peppermint EO to scent.

I LOVE IT!

I've also read that you may want to use some vinegar in your rinse (fabric softener compartment) because the oils may build a residue at some point. I've been using the vinegar and my clothes are soft, they don't smell like vinegar and so far my front loader is doing just fine!

I am getting ready to make my own lavendar fabric softener soon as well.

P.S. you can also use the washing soda and borax in your dishwasher for a less expensive dishwashing detergent. Also use the vinegar for the rinse aid and you should have nice clean clear dishes!

I also make my own laundry soap, and love it, I change the scent regularly
I shred 2 cups of my M&P base and dissolve that in 1 quart boiling water
add 2 cups borax
and 2 cups washing soda ( found at Meijer)
stir until all dissolved
pour into bucket add 2 gallons water stir and let sit overnight
I then stir well, it will be kinda gel-ish
pour into clean empty laundry soap jugs and I scent each one differently ,
P.S. for some reason Ivory does not emulsify well
But thats just my experience
