Teach Soap

Hi All,
I'm using a mitre box and a crinkle cutter to cut my soaps. I have the 40 oz silicone loaf and the 4 lb verticle wooden mold from BB. Even with measuring, there's a fair amount of variability in the weights. Since I label these for sale with weights, and I often make up the labels in advance, it would be nice to have all the bars 4-4.5 (or some other standard size). But... even being careful, some are 4.2, and some are 5.5. Besides the labels, It seems "unfair" that one customer gets a whole extra ounce or more!

So how do you cut?

I use a box cutter with wire.

Is the box cutter hard to use? I was thinking that it would be hard to do a smooth push of a towner of soap through it.

As for the tank--I saw that earlier today. Oh my! It looks lovely. But can I justify the cost? And what do you do if you make a slab instead of a log? Cut it into a log first? (Granted, I don't have a slab mold yet, but if I want one...)

Mellifera, this is what I use.

With the two slots, you can either cut one 2-inch wide bar or two 1-inch wide bars before you have to reposition the log.

And the slots accommodate either the straight or crinkle cutter.

I use a miter box and spackling knife to cut my loaf soap and my bars are almost always within .2 oz of each other. I marked a line 1 inch past the straight cut groove and position the edge of my loaf even with that and then insert the spackling knife into the straight cut groove and make my slice. I also use this knife to cut my slab mold soap, but I measure with a ruler and lighlty score the tops first with a knife before positioning the spackling knife. I bought one wide enough to cut across the width of my slab mold.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Well, I'll have the opportunity to try again tonight. Maybe if I put a physical stop in the mitre box, so that my "one inch" bar really is, and hasn't shifted.
