This one is particulary for you ljm, I bought lard and was going to make my first lard batch tomorrow at what % is it best? What are the best oils to go with it? Castor for bubbles maybe =) Thanks

I'm not Linda, but will say I use lard in more of my soaps than not.... I use it at 30 to 35%. I always include castor in all of my soaps. Think of the lard as the same as your palm... so with that in mind I will usually also include either coconut, babasu or palm kernal oils. Lets see what Linda says.

I use coconut and olive with my lard soap - along with 5% castor for bubbles. Lard rules!

ljm1180, I've been rendering my own. I have a beef suet source..my husband's friend. Who knew!!

He gives me beef suet in exchange for soap!

I used the Great Value shortening before I started rendering tallow....I liked it as well too.

Methree... In your opnion do you think the tallow you render is better than the GV shortening? I am considering this... have a few leads on some farmers.

That looks so nice methree! I hope I can find someone nearby to get suet. I would like to try rendering my own tallow. In the meantime, I will keep on making my lard soaps. :lol:

Couple of questions tallow is animal fat right? What suet? Also how do you render your own? And ONE LAST QUESTION

could you use deer? I have a friend that hunts deer and I believe he does his own butchering, etc.(think)
