Teach Soap

I would love to try her Christmas recipe but wanted to check with you guys first. The first thing that caught my eye was the amount of CO. So I plugged it into soapcalc and its 40% CO. I learned very early on that your recipe shouldn't go over 30% or you'll end up with a very drying bar. Soapcalcs # for cleansing is 27 also...isn't that very high and would be drying? Has anyone tried this recipe? Here is the full recipe...


22 ounces Coconut Oil
11 ounces Olive Oil
11 ounces Palm Oil
5.5 ounces Hemp Oil
5.5 ounces Shea Butter

21 oz. water
8.13 oz. Lye

I haven't used that recipe, but I regularly use 30% coconut oil in my soap with no problem. I think superfat % has more to do with how drying a soap is than the amount of coconut oil in the recipe. I SF at 7%.

I think it depends on the type of skin you have. I find coconut oil over 20% drying, even with a 7% superfat. Be aware that hemp oil has a short shelf life.

I've seen the assertion about Coconut Oil in soap many times, published in some soap books, on blogs etc... and I've not found that to be the case for me personally. It's just never been a complaint with any one that's gotten my soaps, used them, friends, family, Soap Queen Lab customers etc... but that's not to say that there aren't people with sensitive skin or people with skin that is prone to drying that might have a different story. Irena (the awesome soap expert, SoapBuddy) and I both have very different skin - I can use lower superfat than she can, more coconut oil etc... so it really just ends up being a personal preference (like any cosmetic or skincare product - some people will LOVE some ingredients, some people won't).

Thanks all! I'm going to give it a whirl and make a small batch. I have normal to dry skin...more dryer in the winter like many. It looks like a great bar!
