Does anyone know if the percentage of oleic in your soap causes more oiliness after rinsing or is it the tpye of oils used in soaps, such as olive oil? Thinking of taking olive oil out of my recipes. How do i make a clean rinsing soap without worring about it going rancid from using hgh linoleic percentages?

That sounds like a nice research question!
There was a site I found that listed many of the base oils and how much to use of them and why and what-not, but I haven't been able to find it again. I did find this completely boring, un-designed page that has the same information though: (use Ctrl + - (minus or dash) to make the text smaller if you want to). I learned quite a bit off of pages with this kind of information.

As far as I know (which isn't too much! ) the only reason you would feel oily afterwards would be because of superfatting. I made an all canola oil soap before I realized that was a bad idea... the soap came out SUPER soft, not very bubbly, and overly creamy (as soon as it gets wet it feel like when a bar of soap sits in water for too long). But even that doesn't leave my skin oily afterwards. It actually leaves it feeling quite soft and silky <3 :D

Hope that helps!

After using handmade soap and rinsing, your skin should not feel more oily. If it is, I would reformulate your recipe.

Could you post a recipe that you've used that made your skin feel oily? Include the lye and water amounts and the superfat percentage.

Here is my basic goat milk recipe. coconut oil 10oz, castor oil 3.3 oz, olive oil 12.9 oz, palm oil 7.2 oz , lye 4.7 oz, water5.5oz, can goats milk 5.5oz. 7% superfat. Water as percent of oil is 38%. Since my olive oil was the highest percentage and high oleic i've tryed to adjust that but always the same outcome. Could it be the castor oil? I never go over 10% on that. . My soaps are all very hard, and they bubble beautifully. I love using them in the tube but not to wash my hands. I'm starting to think it's my water. I'm bringing my soaps to a public restroom in the city and try them out there. Thank you all for all your help and sites. This mystery keeps me up at night. :(

Goat's milk has it's own fat. So depending how much fat is in the milk, try superfatting at 5% and see if that makes any difference. You say that you use canned goat's milk correct? Does it have any guar gum or any extra sugar (besides the one that's in milk naturally)?

I think it is a great idea to try your soaps at another location. Also have you asked someone else to evalutate your soaps? Maybe it is only your perception.

This may sound like an off-the-wall question, but are you using sodium hydroxide?

I ask because on another forum I belong to, somebody was having some similar problems with her soap. A bunch of us were wracking our brains trying to help her, when she sheepishly posted that she'd accidentally ordered potassium hydroxide instead of sodium.

As far as the olive oil amounts, I make soap with higher percentages than yours with no oily residue. What I don't get are all the oils stripped off my hands. And I wash my hands a lot! I hope you'll reconsider taking out the olive oil, it's one of the best soapmaking oils there is. :)

It's my water!! I tried my soaps at two of my freinds houses and got a slight oil feel on my hands but nothing like at my house. They both have filters and water softeners on their wells. I guess i never noticed how soap feels until i started making my own. Thanks again for wracking your brains on this. This forum has been wonderful. I need to find some local soapers , compare soaps and pick their brains....give you guys a break.
