I am very new to soap making and starting with the Cold Process. I am not sure how to use the Lye Calculator as it has many options to it. Not sure what the % is all about either. Can someone explain?

Go take a look at Kathy Miller soap online. That site will give you a better idea which oils to use. She also has recipes that you can downsize in a lye calculator.

Definitely consider getting a book--buying or borrowing from the library, like one of Susan Miller Cavitch's. I found her Soapmaker's Companion to be really helpful about explaining the process and the chemistry behind it all.

Hi and welcome,

Brambleberry also has a lye calculator which is much simpler for newbies. There are three simple steps and you can put in the ounces of your selected oils instead of percentages, you will also have to select your superfat % I generally go with 5% which works well for me.
