Teach Soap

I just bought some Lou Ana high oleic safflower oil today to try it. Does anyone use this? Does it also have a short shelf life? I made a batch today with it and used it at 20%...and then stored the oil in the fridge. Is this a "bad" oil to be using (from what I'm reading)?

I think a lot of people will tell you that safflower oil is prone to oxidation and DOS, but I use a lot of it and I have only had DOS 3 times in the last 4 years of soaping (hundreds of pounds of soap). I can't explain why that is, but I love to use safflower. I think keeping it refrigerated is a good idea and staying below 20% is also wise. You've already made the soap so watch it and keep us posted!

DOS is dreaded orange spots. It's when the oil oxidizes and goes bad. It also smells bad. I don't use safflower in my soaps at all.

As I said before, people say it contributes to DOS because it has a short shelf life. I still can't explain why, but I have had 3 little spots of DOS in 4 years of soaping with a lot of safflower oil.

Thanks for answering my question. I just bought 1 pound of sunflower oil (not high oleic). Can i still use 20% or less and not have to worry about DOS? When could i notice DOS? 3 months? 6 months? Maybe i should put an expiration date on the soap... Where can i read about balancing oils in soap?
