This is my kitchen soap with cocoa butter. It's suppose to remove pungent odors from your hands, (which it does remarkably well). I thought it would have a cocoa scent, but as i was cooking it in the crock pot it smelled awful. I wasn't sure if that's the way hot press always smells when cooking and was afraid it was going to stay that way, so i added lemon essential oil to it and now it smells like tootsie roll. Not exactly what you'd expect a kitchen soap to smell like. Any way , this is my first try at HP soap. I like the quickness of it (if you need soap that day). I wasn't sure how much to let it cool before adding the essential oil, but i thought if i waited too long it would be heck to get it in the mold, so i added it at 150*. The one thing i'd like to know is, does all handmade soap not rinse off as well as store bought, or feel slippery after rinsing? I didn't use as much olive oil this time. Maybe if i superfat at 5% instead of 7%? Does anyone know? [/c[img][img][/img][/imImageg]

Not sure if I am understanding your question here but, if you are making soap (CP or HP) you need to let it cure - if you use soap right after it is made, your hands will feel slippery - not only because of the oil in the soap but from the reaction of lye on your skin.

I always superfat at 7% and use a lot of olive oil in my recipe and don't have a problem with having oily residue after rinsing.

What was your recipe and how much did you superfat? Did you run the recipe through a lye calculator? Soap should not be slippery after the cook. By the way...it's called hot process, not hot press. :)

In powells defense,I also have been lead to believe that you can use HP soap immediately, which tecnically you can BUT..... I have also discovered that if you recipe contains more liquid at room temp oils rather than more hard a room temp oils that soap is going to be soft, and you can just tell it needs to cure.I have read several different views on weather ther is any lye left after the cook in HP soapmaking. TJ Curry who wrote The Soapers Cookbook does say to cure the soap for several weeks for a really hard and milder bar,but that you can use the soap right away after its cooled off and its fine so I don't know? :D GREAT JOB POWELL :D :D

Technically, HP soap can be used right away, but it will not be as mild as the same soap that cured for at least a couple of weeks.

Good looking soap. I thought you called it hot press because you stamped an impression in it!! :D :D
As for the temp to add the EO.... I think I would go back to where I ordered my oil from and see what the flash point is... you would want to add it lower than that number to be sure that it was not evaporated off. One of these days I will try a hot process.. too bad I gave that old crock pot away.

I did use the CP soap 10 days after i made it and my hands felt slimmy at rinse. Used HP soap day after making with same results. If these soaps just need to cure for the slimminess to go away, i'm fine with that. It's a shame i have to wait a month or so to see if that's the cause or if it's my formula that needs tweeking. In the meantime i've been designing lables, making soap dishes, soap stamps, and testing packaging ideas. Does anyone know where i can design and purchase labels from a web site? To the person who asked about what i colored my soap with...coffee. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and comments.

I make a coffee soap, with and without grounds. Coffee with grounds is a favorite, but everyone I give the other one to says that they don't want to smell like coffee. I use only EO's, and the coffee EO was a splurge I won't do again. I love it, but no one else does.

[coloHi Penny, Do you think that people like the texture of the coffee grounds in the soap or the look of it? How much grounds do use per pound? I don't care for the smell of regular coffee but i do like the smell of flavored coffee.r=#0000BF]

I made a mocha soap recently. I used a rebatched a plain goat milk soap, and added 1 T cocoa powder, 2 oz brewed coffee, and 1 T fresh ground coffee to about 1 lb of soap. The scent doesn't hit you if you're just near the soap, but you can definitely smell it if you pick up the bar.
