Teach Soap

Hi all and first let me apologise if I am asking a question that has already been asked and answered. I will be getting some Lard soon and wonder what is a good percentage to use to make soap with it and what other oils go well with lard. Really looking forward to trying it out as I have only used vegetable oils. Thanks

Why not take one of your vegie recipes and sub the palm oil with the lard. That way you will be able to compare the two and see if there is a difference.

Same here. I use lard between 30-40% in my soaps. You may even want to try a small batch of 100% lard at 8% superfat. It's quite nice, but not very bubbly.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I haven't been using Palm at all and usually use, Olive, Coconut, Shea, Castor, Almond. Should I cut the coconut back and take out the Shea althogether do you think?

I stopped using shea in my soaps because it was mentioned that since soap is a wash-off product, you probably weren't getting any benefits from it. Now I use shea in solid lotion bars instead. Makes mores sense to me!

Try 30-35% lard, 30-35% olive, 30% coconut, 5% castor. I know some people don't like to go that high with coconut, but at 7-8% SF I don't have a problem with it. Soap Queen uses that amount of coconut oil in many of her recipes.
