Teach Soap

So I wanted to make a batch - had the itch, you know? And my next big order of EOs isn't here yet (grrr...UPS)
I had some coconut FO that I bought at the local soap supply store. I have no idea the brand,but it is incredible in lotion bars, dry oil spray and mp. I decided (after calling the owner of the store and being assured it had absolutely NO vanillan in it) to make a batch of cp with it.
I decided to make a 100% coconut oil batch with 20% superfat. I want a really nice white bar, even had the titanium dioxide on hand to make sure.
Everything is going fine, added 2 tsp TD, stirring along - so far so good - now time to add the FO. The minute it hit the soap, this completely colorless FO turned pale electric lime green! WHAT?! My first thought was: do I have anything that smells like lime that I can add to make this color work? I thought I didn't (turns out I had some lime EO, but forgot about it.)
So I stir, no acceleration, and pour. It was a little paler now, but still that same green. And the smell - sort of like over ripe fruit. Not a bad smell, just soooo NOT coconut!
Hubby, bless his handsome heart, says he loves it and I don't have to worry about it - he will use the whole batch himself!

That was a little over a week ago, and now, if you sniff hard, close your eyes and concentrate, you can smell the coconut starting to emerge. AND it has turned WHITE - go figure!

Soaping is an adventure, that's for sure! Glad your soap ended up being white at least...

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

I'm still looking for the holy grail of coconut FO that works well in CP soap and doesn't morph. I've tried MANY. This color you're talking about is a new one on me.

Here's the update: it has been just over 2 weeks since I made this soap - it is now stark white, very hard and glass-smooth and...
you ready?...

It smells just like coconut!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wondering, though: it is rock hard, but it's only been 2 weeks - I usually don't try out the soaps this early....but this one has me dying of curiosity!

100% coconut oil batch with 20% superfat does turn into hard, white soap. If you're ever interested in doing a trade for your soap, I would love to know how this soap smells and how well the fragrance sticks.

So... today is a month since I made the coconut soap, so I tried a piece today for the first time.

wow!!! TONS of bubbles (which I expected) but it was waaaay creamy - which I didn't expect. I guess the high superfat accounts for that.

but as the thread on the oddities and inconsistencies of SoapCalc points out - the program does no take the superfat percentage into account when coming up with the profile numbers.

tempted to make all my soaps this way

Yes, it still smells like coconut.

And Irena, I didn't mean to make all my soaps with 20% superfat - I meant to make them all 100% coconut!! lol
