Unless your soap is certified organic, the best thing that you can do is make them either pure castille (100% olive oil) or use organic oils. Your friend should at least cover your expenses, as pure organic oils are pricey. You can find recipes at Kathy Miller soap and resize them in a soap calculator to whatever size you need. BrambleBerry has a soap calculator that you can use. Most people superfat their soap at around 5 to 7% superfat. If you are making smaller batches, it's best to convert the ounces to grams, for more accuracy. http://www.millersoap.com/

If it's just the perfumes they are allergic to, why not make them an unscented bar with 7% superfat to try before going to all the time and expense of locating/buying organic ingredients? I have a couple of people that love my unscented bars.

Also, if they have been using syndet bars rather than true soap, that could be part of the problem. 8)

Just remember that castille is a little different to make than other bars (use less water/cut right away/cure longer). Generally speaking. But it IS really nice just plain, no scent. And cheaper to make too (in Canada you can buy OO anywhere in fairly sizable quantities). And you can find castor oil anywhere too so you could add that at 5% for lather (are sensitivities to castor common? not sure).

@FarmScapeGoods - Holy moly that's a major sensitivity! Have you read the book "No More Dirty Looks"? It might be interesting to someone like you though you probably know most of that info already anyway :) But there is so much garbage in store bought products, including contaminants and byproducts not even listed on the label.

So were your allergies the reason you started making soap?

@FarmScapeGoods: You make your own cheese?? OMG, when can I come over? You're hardcore! ;)

The book 'No More Dirty Looks' is a little, um, too "hardcore" in that I'm not sure they're giving the reader an objective opinion. That said, there is a LOT of good reference information in there so that we know what we're reading on labels. It's not pretty and I'm more discouraged than ever regarding store bought products. Some say the cosmetic industry is not that different from the tobacco industry 20 or 30 years ago. No one wants to hear the bad stuff but eventually the truth will start sinking in ...

My sister just borrowed this book from the library which I imagine is a must-read for soapers. I cannot wait to get my hands on it!
