Has anyone ever made a shaving bar before.... if so what are so good recipes to start with?

Thanks! 8)

Most recipes can be made as a shaving soap. Make sure the formula has castor and add some clay for slip.

How much Castor in relation to the other oils? Say I use 13oz. olive oil, 10oz. coconut oil, 7oz palm oil.

How much Castor would you recommend me using?

Yes, this topic is of interest to me and my bald head. When you say, "clay for slip," soapbuddy, do you mean clay as an additive? I am so noobish it is not even funny.

I just did this - here's the recipe (clarify that - it looks like brown sugar circles or pralines ^^)
45% olive 14.4 oz
20% coconut - 6.4 oz
20% castor - 6.4 oz
8% palm - 2.56
7% almond 2.24 oz.

lye - 4.35 oz this was 6% excess oil
liquid 8 - 12 oz.

bentonite clay - (the slip) .6 per lb. which is 1.92 oz.
oatmeal .8 per lb. (powered - grind whole old fashioned oatmeal in blender or coffee grinder and sift) which is 2.56 oz.

this is for a 2 lb. batch

I made 1 lb. cause I thought why waste the oil in case it fails?? But it was awesome and I intend to do it again only using this 2 lb. recipe.

I used oakmoss sandalwood fragrance oil and it smells awesome........... no heavenly........ I didnt overdo the scent amount. it is late - so please use the % calc's in a calculator just to be sure - and I used the max liquid - I used water and goats milk only cause I had gm in the freezer. ^^

my little soap cookies ^^ I tried to post the pic, but the file was too big, tried to resize, but then, too small, sigh... it looks like brown sugar

The brown sugar color could be from the fragrance or the milk. Bentonite clay needs to be hydrated in a little water first, so it mixes into your soap batch easier.

ahhh, to the water - I added some to bout 2 oz. of my batch - it mixed ok not as quickly as I thought, then I added that to the light trace and then the oatmeal - this looks really awesome, but it was really soft. It is harding up nicely been sitting for 2 days at this point. I was looking at my notes and I think I have it 7% superfatted - bit too much I think.... I think the color is the fragrance cause I have never had my goats milk soap that dark. It looks like dark brown sugar.

7% superfat should be just fine. Give it some time. Fragrances that have more then 2% vanilla content can make your soaps darker.

Good to know that it's the cosmetic grade but I'll probably use Bentonite since it's so much easier to get hold of it here.
