When someone uses the word "pure" associated with castile soap, what do they probably mean? I always thought it would mean that the soap was made with 100% olive oil. After reading many lables I'm finding that castile soap described as pure usually has other oils. The word pure seems to refer to there being no scents or colors in the soap.

Does anyone have a recipe for liquid castile soap?

Pure castille to me means it's 100% olive oil and nothing else.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people that think if a soap has a high percentage of olive oil, even if it has other oils, that it's still castille. I made a 100% oilive oil soap but used goats milk instead of water to mix the lye so I label it as Goat's Milk Castille Soap. I've also made it with 80% Olive & 20% Castor because I wanteed some lather. That one I don't label as castille because it isn't. I've seen several recipes on the web and in books that say castille even thought it's not all olive oil. It's very misleading. :x

Mine is labeled as Bastille if it's not 100% olive oil. It's mostly olive oil, but it has other soapmaking oils.

I just had this conversation with a lady at my local health food store. I was sticker shocked at the $50.00 price tag on a gallon of castile, and I picked it up and said "wow! I could never sell mine for that much. It's robbery!" I then noticed the lable, and there are a bunch of other oils in it. Yet, the lable clearly stated 100% pure castile soap. I then put the jug back, and handed her one of my cards, nicely stating that my castile is made with 100% olive oil, and it is much easier on the pocket book.

I did get some rose water on sale though :)

It's sad, but a lot of manufacturers put castille on their label and the general public believes them, nor do they look at the actual label. Castille should be 100% olive and nothing else.

 I'm making a batch of liquid and a 5 pound loaf this week!

It really chaps me though. I mean don't get me wrong, I used to buy it in smaller quantities before I started soaping, and it's nice soap, but it's not true castile, and I guess it's just another one of those bigger name companies that figures they can change the rules....

I was surprised when I read the label for Dr. Bronner's "Pure" Castile Soap. I was sure that it would be made of 100% olive oil, but it wasn't. It had coconut oil and something else. I don't remember where I read that to be called Castile Soap there had to be at least 80% olive oil. I don't know who makes the rules when it comes to soap. I'm getting the impression that "pure" doesn't refer to the percent of olive oil in the soap though.

Well, I was hoping for a simple answer but didn't get one. At least other people are wondering about the same issue though.

Eek! I just checked out Kirk's Castile Soap. There isn't any olive oil in it at all! On their site they say "Today, Castile refers to soaps made without animal fats." I find that rather hard to believe. I wonder who makes the rules when it comes to soap. I know there's a Soap Queen. Is there a Soap God?

I couldn't believe it when a well known person in N.Z. was selling Dr Brenners soaps and calling them Castille, and also stating that any other ingredients in the soap disappear and leave no trace after curing. Still stating that they were pure Castille bars. After reading what was in the soaps she's selling, it astounds me how gullible people are.
Rock on the purists.
I still make my batches 100% pure olive oil, and sometimes add Goat's milk, but continue to call them Pure Olive Oil Bars, or Pure Olive and Goat's Milk Bars, that way nobody gets confused.
I have e-mailed her about the soaps she is selling, so far no answer. It's like the blind leading the blind.
